About the WaFd Bank Data Breach

WaFd Bank is the second largest bank in Washington state, and it also has locations in Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.  It is unknown at this time how many of those customers were affected by the breach.

On October 3, 2022, WaFd Bank reported that it had been targeted in a data breach incident.  It is believed the hackers obtained customers’ names, addresses, and financial account information, which is everything they need to open fraudulent accounts!

Given the personal and sensitive nature of the information you entrust to financial institutions, bank data breaches are very concerning. Aside from the privacy risks, there is also a real risk of financial harm. Bad actors who either steal this information or who purchase it on the dark web may attempt to use the information for different forms of identity theft such as opening accounts in victims’ names.

How do you know if you were affected?

WaFd Bank says that it sent out notification letters to the people it believes were affected by the data breach.
