Overview
About the Professional Finance Company Data Breach
Professional Finance Company is a debt collection company that works to recover money originally owed to healthcare providers. In order to help them collect on the debts, the healthcare providers also give information about their patients to Professional Finance Company.
In February 2022, Professional Finance Company’s computers were hacked in a ransomware attack. It is believed the hackers obtained patients’ names, addresses, social security numbers, dates of birth, personal medical and treatment information, and other identifying information!
Given the sensitive nature of medical information, healthcare data breaches are very concerning. Aside from the normal privacy risks, there is also a real risk of financial harm. Bad actors may attempt to obtain medical care in a victim’s name, or use the information for other forms of identity theft such as opening accounts in victims’ names.
How do you know if you were affected?
Professional Finance Company says that it sent out notification letters to the thousands of patients it believes were affected by the data breach.
