Los Angeles Unified School District Data Breach!

Did you know that the personal identifying information of hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren (and their families) was recently accessed in a Data Breach?

If your child attends a Los Angeles Unified School District school, you may be entitled to COMPENSATION!

About the Breach

Earlier this month, it was discovered that hackers had accessed the information of potentially hundreds of thousands of school children in the Los Angeles area, including:

  • Names
  • addresses
  • financial information
  • private health information, including Covid-19 test data
  • Social security numbers
  • Passport details
  • Tax forms
  • Legal documents
  • Prior conviction records
  • Psychological assessments

The experienced hackers were able to get into the computer systems belonging to the Los Angeles Unified School District and steal the sensitive information of an unknown number of students – potentially ALL of them, and possibly even that of former students. They then held it for ransom, threatening to dump everything onto the dark web, where people buy such information and can use it to commit fraud. The school district took the hard line that they would not give in to the hackers’ demands, and as a result the personal data of an unknown number of innocent school children has been dumped onto the dark web starting this past weekend. There, it can be purchased or used for any number of nefarious purposes.  The extent of the harm this could cause to children and their families, who trusted the school district to safeguard the personal information it required from them, is impossible to know. What we do know is that it can have years’ long ramifications.

It is believed that the breach may have affected around 600,000 students, possible more.

Data breaches like these are serious matters.  They can be costly and time-consuming to correct. Aside from the violation of having your private information breached, there is also a real risk of financial harm. Children affected by the breach are at risk of having financial accounts opened in their names and real damage done to their credit before they even have a chance to start their own adult lives.
