About the Centerstone Data Breach

Centerstone is a health organization that offers services such as mental health counseling, addiction recovery services, housing, health care, and foster care with locations in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, and Tennessee.

In August 2022, Centerstone reported that it had been hacked in a data breach incident.  Between November 2021 and February 2022, hackers gained access to multiple employee email accounts.  Using that access, the hackers stole the personal information of patients.  It is believed the hackers obtained patients’ names, addresses, social security numbers, dates of birth, personal medical and treatment information, and other identifying information!

Given the personal and sensitive nature of medical information, healthcare data breaches are very concerning. Aside from the privacy risks, there is also a real risk of financial harm. Bad actors who either stole this information or who purchase it on the dark web, may attempt to obtain medical care in a victim’s name, or use the information for other forms of identity theft such as opening accounts in victims’ names.

How do you know if you were affected?

Centerstone says that it sent out notification letters to the thousands of patients it believes were affected by the data breach.
